ROCK'N'ROLL CEMETERY
(Evergreen Cemetery)
Ocean Springs, Jackson County, MS

Locally Known as the Rock’n’Roll Graveyard, the Evergreen Cemetery is located on Sunset Avenue on the Fort Bayou in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.  For the historical information on the cemetery, Mr. Ray L. Bellande of Ocean Springs has done a wonderful job of researching and documenting the cemeteries of the area.  Check out “The Ocean Springs Archives by Ray L. Bellande” at www.oceanspringsarchives.com/cemeteries_21.htm

I was amazed to see the devastation that was still so very apparent along the Gulf Coast!  It had been five months since hurricane Katrina left her mark on the land, hearts and souls of the residents and it looked as if it could have hit yesterday!  True, there has been on-going clean up along the coastal highway, but as you can see from some of the pictures, they have a very long way to go.  It will take years for a complete recovery.  My heart goes out to the victims of Katrina.

My nephew John, his wife Melinda and baby Ayden took me for a drive along the coastal highway through Biloxi and Ocean Springs, Mississippi.  (Melinda’s Mom, Phyllis showed me the damage in Gulfport & Biloxi earlier in the week).  We stopped at the Ocean Springs Cemetery so that I could take some pictures, and John graciously offered to bring me back after dark for an investigation.

We arrived back at the cemetery shortly after sunset and since the gates were closed, we stood outside.  I set-up the camcorder, started the digital recorder and John started taking pictures with the digital camera.  We didn’t have long to wait before we noticed orbs in the pictures and light anomalies on the camcorder.  Local legend has it that there is an apparition of an old woman who appears after sunset.  I am told that more than one person has been scared away by the old woman who appears to be sitting in a rocking chair, hence the name “Rock’n’Roll Graveyard”.
