INVESTIGATION OF LUCAN, ONTARIO
AND TOUR OF DONNELLY HOMESTEAD November 6 and 7, 2004 Margaret and I (Wendy) spent the weekend of Nov. 6 and 7, 2004 in Lucan, Ontario. We stayed at the beautiful and historic Wilberforce Inn. During our visit, we walked down the streets of Lucan and breathed in the history. We visited St. Patrick's graveyard where most of the Donnelly family is buried, and we had a tour (which we had arranged ahead of time) of the Donnelly Homestead. This was a once-in-a-lifetime dream come true for me. I have been fascinated with the story of the Donnelly family since I was in public school, and I have read many books about them and the time period in which they lived. This weekend gave both of us a chance to learn more about the Donnellys themselves, as told by Mr. J. Robert Salts, who now owns and lives on the Donnelly Homestead, and has done so for a number of years. Mr. Salts brings the story of the Donnellys to life as he weaves his historical narrative, and we were able to visualize their lives (and their deaths, as well) as we listened spellbound. Mr. Salts is a wonderful storyteller, and he also possesses a terrific sense of humour. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF THE DONNELLY FAMILY AND THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF LUCAN, LONDON, AND THE SURROUNDING AREA DURING THE 1880'S, this is definitely a tour you should take. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE DONNELLY HOMESTEAD IS PRIVATE PROPERTY, AND A PRIVATE HOME WHERE PEOPLE ARE LIVING. PLEASE DO NOT JUST "DROP BY" AT ANY TIME. TOURS MAY BE ARRANGED BY TELEPHONING AHEAD TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT. THE BEST TIMES TO CALL ARE IN THE EVENINGS BETWEEN 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. (519) 227 -1244.
The Wilberforce Inn is beautifully
decorated, and the food is mouth-watering. The owners of the Inn
are very friendly, and the service is excellent.
