ST. PATRICK'S CEMETERY in LUCAN, ONTARIO
November 6, 2004

History of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church & Cemetery:

The St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church & Cemetery are located at the corner of Hwy. #4 and The Roman Line, 25 minutes north of London in Lucan, Ontario (Biddulph Township).
In the 1840s, around the time of the Great Famine in Ireland, Catholics began to settle in Biddulph Township.  Missionary Priests from the surrounding areas would visit various pioneer homes and halls to administer the Sacraments.
In 1850 a log church was built on land donated by James Kelly, and the cemetery was consecrated.  The existing church was erected during 1858-1859, and the rectory was built in 1869.  In 1885, a one-room school was built, which is now used as the parish hall.
According to a plaque at St. Patrick's Church, “St. Patrick’s remains one of the few parish centres in Ontario which retains all its original buildings – Church – School and Rectory”.
It is in St. Patrick’s Cemetery that the members of the Donnelly family, who were massacred on February 4, 1880, were laid to rest.  The original headstone, (which had the word “murdered” written on it), erected by William Donnelly in 1889, was replaced in 1964 because of vandalism.  While visiting St. Patrick’s Cemetery, please remember that this is consecrated ground and be respectful while you visit.
