TOWN OF LUCAN, ONTARIO
November 6 and 7, 2004 Lucan, Ontario, in Biddulph Township Lucan, Ontario is situated approximately 20 minutes north of London, on Highway 4. It has a rich history of rivalry and intrigue going back to the early 1800’s when the land that the town is built on was owned by The Canada Company. In 1830, a group of African Americans (at least 30 families) purchased 800 acres of land from The Canada Company and formed a small community called Wilberforce, just northwest of present day Lucan. These families left the Cincinatti, Ohio area to flee from the * Black Laws. After the Black Laws were relaxed, many of the families left the area. In 1832, The Canada Company opened up the rest of Biddulph for settlement. Many settlers came from Ireland around the time of the Great Famine and settled in and around the present-day town of Lucan. James and Johanna Donnelly immigrated to Canada in 1842 and settled just south of the town on Lot 16 of the sixth concession (now called Roman Line) in 1845. Thus began the saga of the “Black Donnellys”. This version is only an encapsulated version of the history of Lucan and Biddulph Township. * Black Laws: Introduced in the early 1800’s in the northern United States, whereby each free person of colour had to be bonded to the sum of 500 dollars.
